On March 1, 2003, FLETC officially transitioned from the Department of the Treasury to the newly formed U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), along with approximately 22 other federal agencies and agencies. Over the past 46 years, FLETC has become the largest provider of law enforcement training in the country. As part of a collaborative training model, federal FLETC partner organizations provide training that is unique to their missions, while FLETC provides training in areas common to all law enforcement officers, such as firearms, driving, tactics, investigations, and legal education. Partner organizations derive quantitative and qualitative benefits from this model, including efficiency associated with shared services, better training, and improved interoperability. FLETC`s mission is to educate all who protect the homeland, and so its training audience also includes state, local, and tribal departments in the United States. In addition, FLETC`s impact extends beyond our country`s borders through international training and capacity building activities. To ensure that the training offered is up-to-date and responsive to emerging needs, the FLETC curriculum development and review process involves experts from all levels of law enforcement, and FLETC works extensively with other authorities and stakeholders in training research and sharing best practices to ensure that it provides the most effective training content.
